Anthropic: early progress on drug development

Anthropic's life sciences team spent the past few months working with six drug developers: BigHat Biosciences, Bristol Myers Squibb, Divergence Labs, Enveda, Generate Biomedicines and The Column Group. It has also started its own discovery programs. The numbers are specific. At BigHat, about 1,010 variants were made and tested in roughly 10 weeks, and the best bound more than 10x more tightly. Divergence Labs got about 35,000 antibody designs in a month. At Enveda, Claude caught all 11 documentation issues human reviewers found plus seven they missed, cutting review time by 89%. Almost everything is still preclinical, and Anthropic says so. The pattern is Claude wired into experiment loops and document review rather than a standalone "AI scientist." → Source

Genie 4 turns world simulation into a steerable, multimodal runtime

DeepMind's Genie 4 generates interactive environments in real time, with visuals, ambient sound, music and spoken dialogue produced together. You steer a running world in natural language: change the weather, move the camera, add people or objects. Gemini handles goal planning inside the simulation. It's a research preview for trusted testers; Google AI Ultra subscribers and Gemini API early-access partners are next, and all output carries SynthID watermarks. DeepMind concedes visual drift over long sessions remains a limitation. It hit 790 points on Hacker News. → Source

Claude goes to government at every level

Under an expanded partnership with the US General Services Administration, a new OneGov agreement offers Claude to federal, state, local, tribal and territorial governments at 40% off. Distribution is the story here: once an agency standardizes on a tool, replacing it is slow. → Source

Liquid AI's LFM3: small, multimodal, open

The first LFM3 release is six models of roughly 2B parameters on a new hybrid architecture, pre-trained on 22T tokens. They cover text, vision, audio, omni and two decision models. Liquid claims LFM3-1.7B beats LFM2.5-2.6B with 35% fewer parameters, fits in about 1 GB at 4-bit with a 256K context, and can be fine-tuned on a single GPU. Weights are on Hugging Face. r/LocalLLaMA is already running LFM3-VL-2B captioning in-browser on WebGPU. Those are Liquid's own benchmark claims, so wait for independent evals. → Source

Apple refreshes the Mac line with M6

Apple introduced a new 14-inch MacBook Pro and an iMac, both with M6. For local-model people, unified memory bandwidth is the spec to watch once independent benchmarks land. → Source

🛠️ Try This Today

Run a small multimodal model locally

Liquid's LFM3 models are small enough for a laptop:

  1. Pick a checkpoint (for example LFM3-VL-2B) from Liquid AI's Hugging Face page
  2. Load a 4-bit build with your usual runtime (llama.cpp, MLX, or transformers)
  3. Feed it a screenshot or short clip and ask for a caption
  4. Compare against a hosted model on the same input

Why it matters: Knowing where a ~2B model breaks tells you which workloads can stay on-device.

🦞 TL;DR

The narrative today: AI is moving into labs, governments and local hardware: drug pipelines, public-sector contracts and 2B models that run in a browser.

My take: The Anthropic drug post is more credible than most "AI for science" claims because it reports boring, measurable gains: variants tested, review hours saved, issues caught. The honest "mostly preclinical" caveat matters, since the hard part of medicine starts after the lab. The GSA deal is quieter but probably stickier. Genie 4 is impressive, but drift over long sessions is the gap to watch.

What I'm watching: Independent LFM3 evals, Genie 4 access, and whether the first M6 benchmarks change the local-LLM hardware math.

Stay informed. Stay curious.
