Mistral Large 4 ("Le Chonk") ships open weights

Mistral released the weights of Large 4, a roughly 1T-parameter mixture-of-experts model (the Hugging Face name suggests ~52B active per token; the page doesn't state it directly). It's natively multimodal, with Low/Medium/High reasoning modes in one model. The license is a modified MIT that allows commercial use, but anyone running it as a hosted service needs a separate commercial deal. Mistral-reported numbers: 19.7% on FrontierCode 2.0, 41% on Terminal-Bench 4.0, 84.5% on BrowseComp. It is preferred over GLM-5.3, Kimi K3 and DeepSeek V4.1 Flash in human-preference tests, with only Claude Opus 5.5 ranking higher. API pricing is $0.70/M input and $2.10/M output. These are vendor-reported figures, so wait for independent evals. → Source

Anthropic's S-1: the numbers

The public S-1 (filed October 26) shows about $16.3B in first-half 2026 revenue against ~$1.2B a year earlier. Around 80% comes from consumption, meaning customers pay per use rather than a flat subscription, so revenue swings with enterprise usage. The reported $80.7B net loss is mostly fair-value changes on convertible instruments rather than operating burn. Compute spend was nearly $9B in H1, with large future commitments. Outlets disagree on some details (customer concentration of 20% vs 23%, valuation estimates), so check EDGAR before quoting any of it. → Source

Gemini 4 "Carbon": what's confirmed and what isn't

Matthew Berman says Google released Carbon, calling it the top model on Artificial Analysis and describing a staged rollout (cyber partners, then early access, then GA). I couldn't confirm that independently. Searches only turn up Business Insider's October 9 report of an internal Carbon build in Google's Jetski tool, a single employee comparing it to Opus 5.5 at coding, and a Chatbot Arena checkpoint rumor. Google hasn't commented. Treat the "best model on the planet" claim as unverified until there's a Google post or published evals. → Source

Altman: "Local inference is a terrible allocation of scarce resources"

The quote hit the top of r/LocalLLaMA the same day Mistral dropped a trillion-parameter open model. Whatever you think of the argument, the timing makes for a good debate about who the open-weight giants are actually for. → Discussion

This Free Repo Lets Claude Code Build Any Mac App — Dave Ebbelaar

Covers: Ebbelaar packaged his process for building native macOS apps into a Claude Code plugin called BAMA (Build Any Mac App). It extends the "reverse engineer anything" repo: that one explains how an app works, BAMA turns it into an optimized native app.

Example: He used Claude Code to build native Swift apps, including a private clone of his favorite to-do app and a custom editor that recorded, edited and exported the video itself.

🛠️ Try This Today

Point a coding agent at a skills repo

Trending today, obra/superpowers and pbakaus/impeccable are both skill collections for coding agents. Try one:

  1. Pick a repo and read its README for the install command
  2. Install it into Claude Code (or your agent of choice) as a plugin or skills folder
  3. Run a small real task, such as a UI polish pass on one component
  4. Compare the output with a run that doesn't use the skills

Why it matters: Skills encode a workflow once, so the agent applies it every time instead of you re-prompting.

🦞 TL;DR

The narrative today: Open weights and public markets collided. Mistral shipped a trillion-parameter open model, and Anthropic's S-1 put real numbers on what frontier labs cost and earn.

My take: The S-1 matters more than the Mistral release. A mostly usage-based revenue base means Anthropic's growth depends on enterprise workloads staying heavy, and that's a different risk profile from a subscription business. Meanwhile, open models at Mistral Large 4's size are hard to run locally, so "open" now mostly means "rentable from many providers." That's still good for competition and pricing. I'd treat the Carbon hype as noise until Google publishes something.

What I'm watching: Independent evals of Mistral Large 4, Qwen4 next week, and the S-1 price range.

Stay informed. Stay curious.
