  • GPT-6 Astra edits Qwen's weights directly — A write-up on weight-space programming lifts a 0.8B model's MATH-500 score from 7.9% to 48.1%
  • Anthropic's S-1 draws its first sharp critique — Roughly $895B in contractual commitments against $96B in cash, and an argument that the SEC should hold the IPO
  • Qwen says it stays open source — An official statement surfaced on r/LocalLLaMA; Reflection's AMA runs today

An LLM that reads and writes neural network weights

The top Hacker News story (2,100+ points) describes "weight-space programming": instead of fine-tuning, a frontier model (the write-up calls it GPT-6 Astra) inspects a small network's weights and edits them. On Qwen3.5-0.8B it traced a looping failure to one direction written by the MLPs in layers 15 and 19, then removed that direction from 64 output columns in each layer. That touched about 131,000 weights, roughly 0.016% of the model. MATH-500 went from 7.9% to 48.1%, GSM8K from 13.8% to 67.1%, and the share of answers hitting the 32,768-token limit fell from 93% to 33%.

The caveats matter. The edit wasn't zero-shot: Astra could run forward passes and use training-set practice problems, and with only 10 or 25 passes the looping barely improved. On Gemma 3 270M, which rarely loops, there was no meaningful gain. The authors conclude that editing weights can remove an obstacle but not add a missing ability. It's a blog post, not a peer-reviewed paper, and the authors call the results "very early". → Source

Anthropic's IPO filing meets its first public critique

An essay on Tech Policy Press argues the SEC should block Anthropic's IPO until it supplies two consecutive quarters of audited financials. Per the article, the S-1 shows $96B in cash against about $895B in contractual commitments, mostly running into the 2030s. At least $582B is non-cancelable and owed to Amazon, AMD, Broadcom, Google and Microsoft. The 2026 results in the prospectus are unaudited, and the author says Q3 revenue growth "slowed to a crawl" over the summer. The article also says Anthropic has committed to 15 GW of data center capacity and expects to need 20–25 GW.

This is one critic's argument, and the numbers are the author's reading of the filing. The article doesn't give a valuation. The filing was reportedly made last week ahead of a planned November debut. → Source

Unconfirmed: a new OpenAI model label showing up in Codex

Posts on X from Codex users say a new model identifier, gpt-6.2-astra, has appeared in their usage dashboards, with one account reportedly near 20% of calls. Nothing appears in OpenAI's docs or API model list. That points to a quiet staged rollout, but I couldn't find a primary source, so treat it as rumor. Users also report quota draining faster. → Source

🛠️ Try This Today

Find out if your small model is looping, not dumb

Weight-space programming only worked because the 0.8B model's failure was looping, not missing ability. You can run the same check on a local model:

  1. Run 50 math prompts with thinking on and a generous token cap.
  2. Count answers that hit the cap instead of finishing.
  3. If many do, try a repetition penalty or a lower temperature before blaming the model.

Why it matters: A cap-hit rate of 93% was hiding a model that could do far more. Measuring it separates a fixable decoding problem from a real capability gap.

🦞 TL;DR

The narrative today: Models are starting to operate on other models' internals, while the money behind the labs gets its first public scrutiny.

My take: The Astra result is real but narrow. It fixed a looping bug, and it did nothing for a model that wasn't looping. That's a debugging tool, not a new way to teach a model things. The Anthropic essay is advocacy, but the commitment-versus-cash comparison is the part worth checking in the filing itself once the numbers are audited.

What I'm watching: Whether OpenAI acknowledges the gpt-6.2-astra label, and what the Reflection AMA reveals today.

Stay informed. Stay curious.
